Tape wont eject

I have the same problem with my camera. The tape wont eject and the error message E01 camera in safe mode etc appears. I managed to smash the cassette up inside of the camera to remove it (without damaging the camera itself) but now I cant place another tape in. I wondered if anyone else had found a cheaper resolution than $200, or knows exactly what the problem was?
