Service mode for older (circa 1990) JVC TV

Mark Alexander Posted Jun 28, 2005

Do older "Master Command" JVC TVs have service menus, and if so, how are they accessed?

I have an older JVC TV, the AV-2080S. This is a 20" (50cm) NTSC (US/Canada) CRT direct-view set, with built-in stereo speakers, MTS decoding, and an S-Video input, as well as composite video and analog stereo audio I/O. It has a square-cornered 'near flat' screen, and a dark gray/black housing; the speakers are on either side. The manufacture date is listed as "November 1990, Made in USA". It has the "Master Command" system with on-screen menus, but these are NOT the "full color menus" that newer JVC sets have. When the S-Video imput is used, composite video I/O is disabled. I would like to be able to access the service menus to adjust geometry, convergence, color temperature, overscan, etc., to more closely match the THX standards. Although the set still performs well (surprisingly so, even when used with an HDTV tuner via S-Video), it's starting to "show its age." The procedure cited on RemoteCentral et al. does not work, q.v., 1. Go to MENU, then select SET CLOCK. 2. Enter 3:21 AM. 3. When queried "Start Clock?", choose OK. 4. When "Thank You" is flashing, hit MENU and UP/DOWN. On my set there is no "Start Clock?", and no "Thank You". The clock starts immediately when AM (or PM) is selected. When the above procedure is followed, I'm simply offered the usual adjustments for color, tint, etc. Does this set have service menus, or are these adjustments performed manually? I have been told that JVC shops use a special "service remote" to access these menus...
