Have My Sony DVD Movie Maker but get error message in trying to play the down loaded files

I can down load and I can play direct to comp but can not play files after down load. Untill I can, I am afraid to errase files from originating camera disk. Using Panosonic DVD Video Camera Model VDR-M30PP Please help, this camera is junk if I can't play the files after downloading
