Stuck cassette mechanism. Can I force it open?

My GR-D90 digital video cam has a stuck cassette mechanism. I see the tape error icon on the LCD screen in play mode, making me think the tape has overrun itself. Any ideas on how to fix this for less than the probable $250? Maybe I should just get a new Sony model that is more reliable.
