Which Camera to Buy

I am an investigator working alot of surveillance jobs. My current Video Camera is a Sony DCR-TRV355E Digital 8 with an optical zoom of x20. I was wondering which digital video camera would give me the best Long range capability, for high quality recording at large distances.
