Camera is locked and I cannot perform any function on it for some reason... PLEASE HELP!!

I recieved this camera as a gift and because of this there is no instruction manual. I have had it for a year now and have had no problems thus far. Now there is a strange symbol in the middle of the viewfinder, it looks almost like an eject symbol with a triangle and a line underneth it. I have tried everything to remove this symbol and unlock my camers but nothing has worked. Please help. I am desperate.
