I also had the same problem on a JVC GR-D22U. Luckily mine was under warranty. I used the camera three times over a year, and then when I went to use it a fourth time for my vacation the video was totally messed, and I would also get the lens cap error message. I have sent it in to the repair shop, and after a month they are ship a new LCD assembly. The video playback works fine, but nothing works through the viewfinder when attempting to record.
