My Macintosh PowerBook won't recognize my digital camera -- preventing me from downloading pictures. Fixable?

Every feature of the camera works as it should; the one problem is "talking" with my computer. I've connected the camera to two different Macintoshes, but neither would recognize (mount) the camera. Taking the cheap first step in troubleshooting I tried a new USB-Mini4 cable: no difference. Thoughts?
