VCR unit stalls and unresponsive

I recently purchased a JVC DR-MV1S Video/DVD recorder. I am have encountered problems with the VCR stalling or not responding. First, if I have not used the VCR in a couple of days and try to insert a tape into the player, the auto insert does not work. Also, if I left a tape in the player for awhile and try to eject or play the tape, the unit does not response. Seems like the only way I could get the unit to work again is to unplug it, wait a few minutes, then plug it back it. Somehow it resets itself and works fine till the next time I encounter these problems. Is this a common problem? Is there a way to fix the problem without always unplugging the unit?
