The handy cam tape loader is moody when accepting a tape into the bay

For about the last 6 months my Sony 8 MM Handy Cam that is about 9 yrs old has been moody when putting in a tape. It opens and closes fine when no tape is presnet but gets tempermental when putting in a new tape. Now a tape is stuck inside with a warning telling me it needs to be ejected, but no response when the eject button is used. It seems like there is some kind of sensor or trigger that is or is not being properly activated.
