Desperate working mother needs jvc tv help now!

Help! I received a used 27 inch jvc television Model @ AV-27cm4 with no remote and no instructions booklet. Although the picture is beautiful watching a dvd, vcr tape, or playing a video game, I cannot get regular cable tv or even broadcast tv(with an antennea) to come through. I just get a blue screen. There are some buttons on the front of the tv that sat Function -/level +/Channel and I've tried them in all sorts of combinations, but no luck. Will using an universal remote allow me to get to some kind of set up menu? Do I need to do something like that? H E L P ! This is driving me crazy and I am about ready to take a baseball bat to the screen. Thank you for your time. Tina Monroe
