Christmas pressie broken

Hey guys i wonder if you can help me out ?.We bought our daughter a 2nd hand jvc video camera for christmas....(couldnt afford a new one).It wont playback and when it is switched to play the led does not come on and theres no power to the monitor.I brought it to a repair shop and they wanted €120 to look at it and extra for parts....no way !If i knew what to look for i'd do it myself.Any help appreciated.
