setting up remote to control non-JVC devices not working...anyone have experience with this problem?

The remote control for the JVC DR-MV1S (dvd/vhs recorder)is supposed to be able to be able to control even non-JVC devices that might be hooked up to the unit. The manual gives instructions and listings of different vendors and their corresponding "control code" for each vendor's devices. For both my cable box (1 yr old) and my TV (5 yrs old), the codes don't seem to work. I'd at least expect the newer cable box code to work, but no-go. Additionally, as recommended, i punched in all vendor codes in an attempt to get my devices to respond, still no go. That leaves the possibility that the instructions might be faulty. Anyone here own one of these JVC dvr's? Any luck controlling other devices? thanks in advance
