CD-50M Digital Concepts battery wont work in MVC-CD500

I bought a CB-50M battery pack last week as a backup for my Sony MVC-CD500. The package lists the CD500 as one of the models it should work in. Digital Concepts claims the battery replaces the Sony NP-FM50 battery. When I put the CB-50M in the camera it draws enough power from the battery to display a terse message informing me that I have to use a Sony brand battery then shuts down. Is there any way I can get this Digital Concepts battery to work with the MVC-CD500? Anybody else encounter this problem?
