i can pick plays but can't control players.

i'm into my 5th season in PS2's Madden 2005. When the game starts off, I can control the toin coss (when i'm a visiting team), i can control which plays to choose (both on defense and offense) after i choose the plays i can go through my players, but i can't move them. On offense I can control when to snap the ball, any audibles, but after the snap i can't control any of the players and the computer takes over playing the downs for me. The same goes for defense. Any idea how to fix it or what the problem may be?
