Error message flashes on screen FO4, anyone know what it means?

I turn on the camcorder and after approx' 5 seconds the red light at the back flashes and an error messages appears FO4, i then cannot record, replay or do any other function. The screen still shows a picture and I can eject the tape but nothing else. The trouble shooter in the manual does not give an idea as to the problem, can anyone help, because although the camcorder is 5 years old it works well other than that! Thanx
