Can't acomplish a good shallow depth of field with the Sony VX 2000...Help!

I have been able to produce a great defocused background and clear foreground with larger digital cameras, but I can't accomplish the same effect with the VX2000. I have placed my subject a large distance from the back ground and played with the distance between the subject and the camera. I have exausted all "disance" options. Is there another way?...different lens perhaps? There is a slight defocus in the background, but not at all what I'm looking for.
