HomeAudio Trouble I had this set in my basement for about 5 years. It was dead due to a power surge. I replaced the usual fusable resistor, 2 transistors, and one dual diode. The set turned on(I was jumping up and down). I got it for free - not bad. My brother got it from someone and gave up on it and gave it to me. Its a Sony 46" rear projection TV - Model #KP-46XBR35. It still has a great picture, but now has NO sound. It was working fine for a couple of weeks. When the sound went, it sounded like a cell phone with a bad signal and then just cut off completely. The stereo light comes on still. It doesn't matter if the sound comes from the turner or a video in source, still no sound. There's no blinking standby lights or anything. I started checking circuits for shorts and bad solder connections and found nothing. The only thing I found is the audio transformer that connects to my YG board(Power RECT) has NO continuity between the two AC power lines going into it. This transformer has two wires going into it(White and Orange) and four wires coming out of it(2 Blue and 2 Red). The out wires, according to my service manual, shows good continuity(Red wire with Red, Blue with Blue) . Its getting power and all of the fuses are good, but nothing is coming out of it. This seems like a stupid question, but would this transformer keep the sound from turning on? This TV is starting to be a money pit but I don't want to buy a new one. A $60 transformer is cheaper than a $2500 TV of course. The only draw back is this set is about 10 years old, but still looks new. Any info would probably help. Thanks.

It was the transformer. The thermal cutoff fuse inside the transformer was open. I pulled the old one out(was fun)and put a new one in. It was $1.59. Not bad at all. I had to try something, a new transformer is NOT available. |
