Equipment powers off after 2 second power on. Cannot make it work.

I got this camera from my daughter who left home for college. When I turn the power on on this equipment it only stays for 2 seconds and power off again. Screen is blank. (using Eveready Super Heavy Duty AA batteries). If you switch the round button to "Set-up" the screen comes up, but with other choices, i.e. "SCN" screen is blank. Help
