Controller won't work with espn hockey 2k5.

I was playing espn hockey 2k5 with a generic controller. The R1 & L1 buttons don't work. I brought a SONY controller and only the "start" button seems to work. When I take it out and put it back in it brings up the help menu or just goes to the next screen. Is the problem the game or controller. Please help and thanks for your time.
