Camcorder records audio but no video

When I power up the camcorder I get a flashing "lens cap" message on the screen even though the lens cap is not installed. There is no video image on either the screen or through the viewfinder. When record is selected the camera records only audio (no video image during playback). Previously recorded tapes play back normally. Any assistance you can provide will be appreciated. The camera is 1 year old.
