Mic problem

I just bought a network adapter and mic the adapter is used but the mic is new. I am connected from the adapter to a hub (not a router) to the DSL. I can hear out of the headphones but no one can hear me through the mic. I have tried a new headphone set and a different PS2 but still have the same problem. Is there an option I am not realizing or something I missed. I have tried 3 different online games Socom, Nadden NFL and Rainbow six 3. I have an Xbox that is wired the same and I can talk using that.
