troubleshooting my JVC TV

I need help in troubleshooting my 20" JVC TV. In some channels, a black rectangle would suddenly appear covering almost the entire picture (sort of a caption). What can I do to remove it? I've tried every setting on the remote control, but none of them worked. This is not the first time this happened to my TV set, but I was able to fix it before. I just cannot remember what I did it to fix it. I was thinking if the universal remote I'm using lacks features that is in the original remote that would fix the situation.

Mine did that....the black rectangle came on and stayed on every time I used my tv (but not on all channels) for MONTHS before I figured out the problem.....My CAT had sat on the remote (as usual) and somehow programmed it with his butt to use the "closed captioning" feature.....(something I don't subscribe to as nobody in the household is hearing-impaired...and so the box would be black rather than filled with the captioning)! Your universal remote MUST have a "menu" key, which gives you access to your tv's various features and how to turn them off/on.
