NO image on playback or record in viewfinder or LCD panel of a Sony CCD-TRV 318 Hi8 camcorder

Not seeing any image from known tapes or recording when playing back the tape through viewfinder or LCD panel. Started abruptly during a playback session. Yes it's plugged in, tape inserted and switch to VCR/Player setting. Any ideas/resolutions?
