HomeI need help with sound on an independent movie. Hi, i am looking for ways i can improve sound with the equipment that i have. I have a me66 shotgun mic. I am the boom operator for an independent movie. Even though this is the first time i've ever operated a boom mic i am doing a good job with placing the mic close and in good direction and angle. I use my frame line as well. Sound is ok on the movie so far but we will have to use ADR in some scenes. I can't buy anything that is expensive, all I'm asking is if there is anything I can do to improve sound with the mic that i have. I have no clue what else can be done to improve sound. I'd appreciate any advice!

I think I can help you, I have a very poor experience in sound for movies, but am very experienced audio engineer. Please, tell me What is ADR? 1. The microphone should be mechanically isolated from the grip 2. When shooting in exteriors, you should use some sort of Windscreen to reduce noise produced by wind (remember, it can affect sound quality in some cases, don't abuse) 3. Whenever possible, try to use a mixing console to process the incomming audio from the microphone, is esasier to fix problems before they come into the camera, specially when there is someone specialised in audio. 4. "Closer is not allways better", When the microphone is very close to the source of sound, the minimum movement causes the signal to drastically change, remember the rule: sound = k*(sound pressure level)/(distance)^2 in plain english: The perceived sound is proportional to the square of the distance to the sound source. So, If you move 5 in from the original position, the sound will be affected mor dramatically if the mic is placed at 10in than if it would be placed at 20in, for example. The choice here surely wil be to place the mic at 20 in, but it can also have its disadvantages, It the noise in the room is high, you will be catching more noise, independently of the kind of microphone you are using. 5. Allways check you equipment prior to a recording date. 6. Get the best equipment you can afford, and don't use cheap cables and connectors, It is better to use CUSTOM made cables, with a good quality cable and premium quality connector (NEUTRIK is aleader in quality connectors, while GOTHAM is it in cables) lip-sync ... do the whole thing from a studio ... if it dont work, the movie becomes a comedy ... ever seen kung-pow :) |
