camera shuts off when selector switch is set to picture or movie mode

i have had this cam for a few weeks and has worked great then one day it started acting up if the switch is in set up mode or view picture mode it turns on fine but when it is set to take pics or movie mode it shuts off and when it shuts off the lens extends out instead of in like it should
