need to create dvd from my hi8 videotapes

I have a hi8 camcorder and a computer with a 1394 port. I already know that I need software to edit, a dvd burner but what I don't know is if I need an aditional piece of hardware or only the software. Greatly appreciate help and advice. Chuy.
