Re: DCS-P30 error E:61:20

Merv Clelland Posted May 25, 2004, in response to:Robert Amirault

I have a DSC P50 with the same symptons as this subject. I would be very interested it what the problem is. I believe its a lens/focus adjustment at startup. I am a tech and would like to know if its some thing I could fix. Also if a service manual is aailable for this camera in PDF format. Many thanks.

I too have this error. Well.. being that the cost of repair was equal to or more than the price of the camera, I decided to take it apart myself. What I discovered is that the error code has to do with the viewfinder. My error code is accompanied by a funky gear grinding sound. It helped me find the problem, some what. I took the viewfinder apart and the motor feels wobbly. The gears look fine. I am not saying this is the problem. Merely letting you guys know it is viewfinder related. My next step will be to see if parts can be purchased. I would like to replace it as whole and see if that fixes it. Good luck!

I found o piece of plastic or something in the viewfinder mechanism. It was blocked and now it works fine.

There is actually 2 motors on the lens bracket, One is for the lens and the other is for the sight glass so the distance matches in the sight to what the lens is.., A few tiny screws hold them all into a plastic mount, IF you can get them out and see if anything is stuck or moved on the tiny motors I would say go for it, I have repaired over 30 of the DSC-P50s before the same way so it shouldnt be a problem..
