Surround sound help needed with Sony DVD player

Hi all. I need some help figuring out this new (used actually) DVD player I just bought. I had a Toshiba DVD player (until it was dropped on the floor) and the optical audio sent to my sound receiver was automatically picked up and sent through my 5.1 channels. However, with this Sony player the optical audio is sent to the receiver but it only sends it to 2 channels. Then when I push the Surround Sound button on the DVD player it says "TVS Wide" or "TVS Normal" but no sound comes out. Basically, the surround just does not work and I don't know why. Does anyone have any idea? Thanks a lot! Shawn
