Making home movies.

Have digital video Cannon 600 What system requirements for starting to make home movies and recommended software. Prefer PC to Mac re work compatability Ie chip hard drive DVD drive RAM firewire or USB2 Software to get started. Any other information would be much appreciated as finding electronic shops not very helpful as most seem to still talk only of converting back to VHS format.
