Creating a CD/DVD from MiniDV.

Hi, we just bought a Sony MiniDV Camcorder and for some crazy reason were under the impression we could download the MiniDV onto the computer and make movies to share with family and friends on either a CD or DVD. I know we can share them via websites /email etc but I want a hard copy to start creating a library of movies. Sounded simple enough to me but the only thing we are able to burn is onto a CDR and we only get video when we play it on our DVD player. We have audio and video when we play it back on the computer. What am I doing wrong? Would really appreciate any assistance you can offer. This is driving me crazy.. Thanks so much!!
