I've got playback problems with my gear, but they are interemittent.

I'm recording on my Canon GL1 which has a fair number of hours on it, but has been a workhorse. Playback in the camera is fine. When I pop the tape into my Sony DSR-20, I sometimes get huge drop-outs, mosiacs, and stuttering audio and video. What's got me stumped is that the problem goes away after I change tapes and go back to the one that had problems. And I haven't had any problems at all playing back DVCam tapes. I've used a cleaner cassette on both the camera and the deck. Is it possible that the deck heads are cleaning off or aligning on the first few passes? At first I thought it was my camera, but now I'm not so sure. And no, I'm not recording in LP mode. Any input is greatly appreciated.
