my internal microphone won't work when i film, but when i film with an external mic, it works fine. what gives?

okay, i've got a samsung sc-d23 miniDV. for the past couple of months i've been filming with an external microphone hooked up directly to the camera. the other day, i tried to film with just the internal mic, but it wouldn't record any sound. it works fine with the external mic, but not with the int. mic. can anyone help me?
