Hi, I have a 32" KV32S22 Sony that has stopped working

Well , not exactly. Sometimes I will get sound and the picture appears for about a minute then it goes wonky with vertical distorting lines and usually shrinks to the top half roughly, then shrinks and then shuts off. Often the standby light will be flashing. Does this mean I can tell my wife I need a new Plasma Widescreen? It worked last night until I turned it off although the red light was not on. The trick was I had to bang the front of the TV and then the picture went back to normal. It worked for 4 hours until I turned it off. Then it acted up again. I know its barbaric but if I bang the case the picture comes back for a bit but usually goes staticy then shrinks to the top 1/2 then shrinks and disappears. Does this help in the diagnosis? Thanks
