Sony STR SE501 receiver problem

Hello, It appears that I have some malfunctioning relays in my surround receiver. They will all of a sudden click and I lose sound in the center channel and the rear channels. I'm looking for a service manual for the Sony STR SE501 receiver and also where can I purchase new blue relays. Thanks kyo

Same problem with mine- just started happening as I hooked up my kids new Nintendo Wii Console to it (but was twitchy anyway). I noticed that if I jiggle the back rca connectors (going in) it seems to cause a short or something which causes he relays to "click" and lose sound. Anyway, if anone knows which relays to use or what the ultimate fix is, please let me know.

OK, I've fixed all the cold solder joints I can visually find. The clicking and snapping have stopped and all the channels work except for the center channel. If I listen close to the speaker I can hear white noise, but no audio. I can hear and feel the relay clicking on/off if I turn the center channel on/off. I've checked the speaker and wiring and all is fine. Are there any other common problems with the center channel that I should check? I do not have test equipment to check the signal path.

I bought this unit some years ago and not long after my rear left kept going off, I had to ramp up the volume to get it to come on again. The other week the center started the same thing. I could hear the relays clicking on and off and opened up the box and found I had the same problems as most writing here. Now it only runs a few mins and goes off. After reading this and hearing on how much sucess you are all having Im off to repair mine now. Thanks to all who posted and confirmed that this appears to be a major problem with this unit. It is a GREAT unit but this problem has been a real let down. Good luck to all who read this forum and happy listening as Im sure this will be a great fix for all.

Thanks for the great how-to fixed mine today. Wish I knew that a year and a half ago? Got a great bedroom surround now

I had the same problem, opened the unit and looked at the solder. Sure enough, same solder issue, same place. I put it back together and I got my rear left and subwoofer back perfectly. But the entire right side, even on the "B" speakers have a relatively low output, even with the balance set to +8 to the right. It is still less than half the volume of the right. Do the right and left side have separate amps? I don't think it's a bad ground because I disconnected all but the front "A" speakers and then swapped them, it did not follow the speakers.

Hello, It appears that I have a problem when explosions or any loud noise comes about my reciever goes into PROTECT MODE. Any one knows what causes this and how I can fix this problem. Mike

I have the same problem and I think it is in the Speaker select switches. Everytime I touch the a/b switches it pops. I am going to try and change the switches and see if that will fix the problem. Let me know what you have found. Thank You
