Recorder Incompatibility

I have two Sony Video8 EV-S700U recorders used for audio recording only. Tapes recorded on one machine do not play properly on the other. Tapes recorded and played on the same machine are fine. Something is either incompatible, out of alignment or broken. Are there any suggestions to help me determine which machine is the culprit?
