I just got a break from my job and i'm thinking on using my savings on making a documentary...

I'm thinking on starting this project very small with a few people (2 or 3) and I was just wondering what kind of equipment would I be needing... what kind of cameras and microphones would be the best to use. I’m not sure if y should use a digital camera or a 8mm (the old ones)... If you could just name me a few cameras, lenses, microphone...what ever you would use with a semi low budget that would be great.
