Hello, We have a Sony Handycam CCD TRV328 which keeps giving us a message to hook up the power source. We have hooked up the power source, removed the battery and everything else we can think of. Our main problem with the camera is that we can not remove the tape that is in the camera. It will not let us rewind, tape or anything. It is stuck. We hit the eject button and the tape removal process does not move. WE have pushed the reset button in the screen case area but that doesn't seem to do anything either. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks Deb

A little "slap" might not do it, i tried a gentle cuff, nothing, a "determined whack", nothing, finally i gave it a "calibrated wallop", eureeka ! ! ! I have more than 30 years experience as a tech, later as an engineer and now a programmer. I fix almost anything myself except televisions and was determined to fix this. I have watched this thing cycle a hundred times looking for limit switches, sensors, mechanical travel. I have cleaned what could be cleaned, greased the places that had old dry grease - all to no avail. This camera has been from the canadian border of maine all the way to florida. it has spent the last 3 years in a backpack in mexico, climbing mountains, exploring caves, jumping off small cliffs on a mountain bike and more. I know i got my money out of it, but it was still filming crystal clear and i hated to junk it. for what sony charges to fix it, you could buy a new one onsale, but every year sony takes away more features, and my last sony lasted 13 years, i hated to junk this one at only three 1/2. SO - GRACIAS A DIOS - for this website. But please stop calling it "Slapping" and use the correct technological term "Calibrated Wallop" - Adios - a two hundred year old hacienda with adobe block walls and palm thatch roofs is calling me to be filmed -

I was having the same C:31:22 error code on my Sony Handycam TRV460. Could not get past the error message. Today I found a site that suggested slapping the tape side of the camera. IT WORKED!!! Apparently this is a common problem with Sony camcorders and the slapping seams to knock something back into place. Good luck to all of you out there.... and happy slapping!

Trust the advise offered by number of people who have experienced the same C31:22 error and solution offered DOES WORK. My Sony DCR-PC5 exhibited C:31:22 error since May 2005 and I have been trying to get it working but without success. Technicians have washed off their hands as well. I heeded to advice of "SMACKING TECHNIC" and it REALLY WORKED FOR ME. I am estactic and overjoyed to regain the fully functioning Camcorder. I have decided to become an expert for undertaking repairs for all those who have c:31:22 issues and I will fix it for nominal cost.....if your smacking does not work for you. People... believe this board and the advise offered... although it is simplistic but is very effective and the outcome is excellent. NO KIDDING. Happy SMACKING folks with your c:31:32 error. One happy person who learnt so much from other who provided this advise. A BIG THANK YOU.

I wanted to join the ranks of the "slappin' happy" regarding Error Code C31:22. I have a Sony TVR530 (Digital 8 camcorder). I've had it for several years and it has worked fine. Recently it came up with this C31:22 error code and I could not get it to work - just lots of tones and flashing error messages. No matter how many times I reset it - no dice. I finally called Sony and they said I would have to send it in to be refurbished. It was not a problem I could fix. I got all the info and was told where to send it and that it would cost $211 PLUS shipping to them. THEN, I googled the error code and found all of you "slappin' happy" people. I went back to my camcorder, carefully slapped it in love, RESET it, and PRAISE THE LORD - it now works great. Although it has a couple other minor glitches (they do not effect its operation), I am good to go. THANKS FOR SAVING ME AT LEAST $225! Don't forget the RESET step!

I have the same error code (except my camcorder is a Sony TRV318), did a Google search, and your message was the first I opened. So I smacked my camera and sure enough it worked! Thanks! I hope the camcorder will at least make it through Christmas.

    • Re[2]: Error Codes Assistance Joshua - 25th Jun 2006 21:22
Just a word of caution: On my Sony TRV17 I was also getting this C:31 or C:32:something error message (not always the same last two digits, but usually 22, 23 or 16). I read about the smack-it theorem on a couple forum sites and decided this must be the solution. I smacked the camcorder tape-side first lightly, then progressively harder (as suggested if to no avail) until I hit it with approximately equal to the force of dropping it on the carpet from 2 feet or so – stern force, but nothing extreme. Well, two pieces came out from the tape compartment when I ejected the tape next: First, a chrome-colored metal bushing with a black rubber outer coating (about 5/16 inch long and 3/16 inch wide. Second a white plastic tubular spacer, about as thick as a pencil lead and 1/8 inch long. I removed some screws on the flip-side of the tap housing to gain access to the inner tape mechanism and found a little prong that the bushing fit on nicely and the spacer fit on it snuggly, so I installed the bushing and pushed the spacer on over that to hold it in place (I don’t know if I put it together correctly, but now it does work. So – if you have this C:31 or C32 error, check out the prong inside the tape compartment that I describe next (you can see this without any disassembly). There are seven items protruding from the center of the tape widget, if you count from the lens side of the camera, it will be the second prong, kind-of situated up and between the two others – the first prong will be metal, the second (the important one) should have a black rubber bushing and the third a white bushing or spacer. Also, the prong, if pressed with a pencil or something, should glide back and forth (this prong pulls the tape down around the heads). If your Sony doesn’t have this black bushing, or if it is loose or not lined up with the other prongs correctly, this may be your problem. Also, if you do anything inside the compartment, be sure to run a cleaning tape to clean the heads from any debris or oil you may have introduced into the compartment.

I wanted to chime in and say THANK YOU because my Sony handy Cam TRV-350 is now working again. I had the same error code C 31 22 (after traveling in an airplane with camera in the luggage) and tried the slapping trick to no avail. I even threw it against the carpet. Then I read about this black bushing and sleeve and did find that they were loose and on the floor! Took some time to reassemble those parts as I had to take part of the cover off to get inside, but upon putting those back on (2nd metal prong from lens side) and hitting reset after "boot up", the camera worked. So, thanks a million for saving me a trip to the store for a new camcorder!

Just wanted to say I appreciate the advice.I have a ccd-trv118 camcorder that had the same c31:22 message. The model is four years old and I began having problems last year this time with the error. After two weeks of not knowing whether to send the unit in to be repaired(est $100-$300) or just buy a current model I angrily hit the camera. Amazingly, this worked and I had no problems for several months. However, the problem came back and that is when I found your advice on the prongs. Apparently these particular prongs need to be in a certain alignment with one another. Looking at the left set of prongs I simply pryed the one to the right of the bushing over and put a tape back in and the unit is now working flawlessly. I hope it continues to function properly. THANK YOU FOR THIS ADVICE. Appreciatively, Scott

Wow -- thank you so much for this information. I was about to ebay a new camera so that I could retrieve my already taped movies when I came about this site. I can't believe that with your information I opened the tape deck and replaced the bushing and plastic piece and it works. I have learned that I need to download each tape as I finish it, lest I lose some of my grandson's cute things.

Hey, I could not believe it!! Same C:31:22 error code as the rest of you on my TRV 250E...took the wrist strap off and gave it a good couple of whacks in the guts with the palm of my hand..ouch!! and the thing works again. Oh the joys of the ancient technology of brute force! This reminds me of the days when we used to give our old television a kick in the guts to get the picture to go clear and I remember that used to work too. Thanks again...this forum is worth its weight in gold.

I have a Sony CDX-A15RF Compact Disc Changer and I got an E-99 error message. I've searched the itnernet for over an hour and tried to fix it; some say that it is a disc jam and I need to check the wires or press the reset button, maybe near the hidden head unit? I use a command controller and I have a standard head unit, no loose wires, banged it a little, even looked for a reset button, nothing! What can I do? My unit was manufactured in 1991 in Tokyo, Japan and it is unit number 3-360-720-01 and 172647, hope that helped you in helping me. Thanks for your time and efforts! I really want my cd's back and listen to them too!

My MVC-FD87 has been working like a charm for about 4 years. I have never used anything but floppies. I don't even have the little memory stick option that fits in the floppy. After taking a picture of our thermometer about to erupt out the top, I set the camera on the counter. Two days later I wanted to get a picture for the grauskinder and it was belly up. I got a "drive error" message with error code C:32:01 and the little disk icon showed the new diskette as being full. I turned it on and off, replaced the diskette, checked the battery, (That is: I took it out and looked at it, and using a few choice words put it back in the camera) I can't find my manual, but I did have the box the camera came in. It has an 888 phone number to call Sony. I fumed a couple of days and finally made the call. As I was on the phone with Sony I turned the camera on to read the error message, and the stinking thing worked like it was supposed to. No error, no error message, no disk full icon. I even took a picture to see if I was mis-reading the thing. The lady I was talking to at Sony told me that the C:32:01 message is supposed to tell me that the camera needs "resetting", (whatever that means). That I had apparently left it unattended for an extended period of time. When I sai, "two days", she asked about the lens cap. I got confused, so she said that I had apparently "reset" it at sometime during my frantic tries to get it to work. She said someting about the lens cap being a part of whatever is going on inside, and I think she also said the cap has something to do with "resetting" the camera. She wanted my email address for future product promos, but she refused to send me anything relating to the error code, what causes it, or the proper fix. Last night I finally got the pictures I wanted for the littlefolk and sent them off by email. So now I am waiting for the next time it happens, and I won't know any more then than I do now. Nice folks them Sony responders. As I said, I'm puzzled.

I also have a Sony MVC-FD87 that has worked perfectly for the ppast 4 years. I have never used anything but floppies. I don't even have the little memory stick option that fits in the floppy. After several clickings on the display button I got a "drive error" message with error code C:32:01 and the little disk icon showed diskette as being full. I read here that the 32:01 error may have something to do with a, or some, camera-to-diskeete contact inside the camera, and that a good slap might get it working again. So I thougth if that's the case, maybe mine was accumulating foreign matter through the inserting and re-inserting diskettes over a period of time. So , , with the thing not working anyway, and Sony not being any help, I got myself a can of compressed air that the computer technicians use. I stuck the little straw on the nozzle and gave the camera innards a couple og gfood doses of compressed air, and , , , , , VIOLA!!! she's working again. I don;t know for how long, but at ;east for now I'm up and running again. Hope this helps somebody else.
