Power supply issue

Sony power supply blowing

The power supply issue is not the root cause of your problem. you must first replace the fly back which is casuing the short. This is what is causing the power supply to fail. Once that is fixed, fixing the power supply is easy. Replace Q601 (2sc4834), Q602(2sc4834), R607(0.1ohm)...that usually does the trick.

I replaced flyback, fixed the p.s., it worked great for 30 minutes and blew the transistors again. Now what?

I just got done replacing Q601, Q602,(shorted) R607(open) and Horizontal output transistor (shorted). Set worked fine for 3 days before going dead. I guess the flyback is next?

So if I use ordinary 2SC4834 transistors from MCM Electronics I can expect them to fail? I don't have schematic yet but I did find the components mentioned above in the PS shorted and resistor open. So the flyback and/or the horiz. output are suspected too? Please reply to my ggendron@chhi.org if you have any further information you'd like to share about this "dead" set.

MOST OF THE TIME IT IS A SHORTED HORIZONTAL OUTPUT TRANSISTOR, NOT THE FLYBACK. THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM ARE POOR CONNECTIONS ON THE DRIVE TRANSFORMER. THE REASON YOURS RAN ONLY A SHORT TIME COULD BE THE TRANSISTORS. YOU MST USE SONY PARTS ONLY.
