What's the best way to get clean audio for miniDV video?

Does anyone out there have a recommendation for quality audio recording for miniDV shooting? I have lavalier mics that go XLR into my camera, and this works well. But is there a better way to get cleaner audio? If so, what do you recommend? Recording to DAT? Or Nagra? Does separating the audio from the video tape do anything but create the time-constraint of having to resync the audio in post?
