Digital Audio from Sony Video8 EV-S700U to Alesis ML-9600

For editing purposes, I would like to transfer PCM audio only (without video) recorded on a Sony Video 8 EV-S700U to the Alesis Masterlink ML-9600. This is easy to do with the Sony's audio analogue outputs, but I'd like to keep everything involving the direct transfer in a digital domain without using the analogue conversion. Is this possible directly from the Sony to the Alesis? If so, how do you do it and which outputs on the Sony should be used?
