Producing glossy music videos

Producing glossy music videos like some shown on MTV

Can any one tell me why some music videos look so different, that is, the picture of some look so glossy, silky, sleek and polished when others look so dim and home made.
Is it due to lighting, camera, shooting on film rather than video, edititng, post-production, etc..

Yep i agree! with the right look,lighting,colours and props etc... you can definitley pull off a p.diddy like video clip

Guru, Thank you very much for your reply, however, can you still achieve the same glossy effect with a common miniDv camera when using all that you mentioned.?
