compatability of camcorders (digital)

i want to by a camcorder preferably digital but i don't know what to choose.
i a living in usa now but i am goin buck to Europe in few months and i don't know if i will be able to use it there. is any model in the american market that is compatable with the europian technologi ?( tv, tapes etc).
please help me i am totaly lost. At the shops salesman tell me difrent thing and i don't know what to do.
