My Sony model PCG-705 battery will not boot up computer.

I bought a new replacement battery, charged it and it will not boot the computer up.Won't get even a light to glow. Neither did the old battery. But like the old battery, if I boot from AC adapter and then disconnect the Adapter the computer runs fine on the new battery. I am running Win 98 and have the Batscope program from the original Win 95.It shows the battery fully charged and system charger working properly.
